Overview

Quality healthcare for culturally and linguistically diversified populations requires specific knowledge, skills and attitude to be exhibited by healthcare professionals. The main goal of the cultural competence in healthcare workshop is to eliminate health disparities, and to increase the access to quality health care services to all people from different cultural background, origin, ethnicity, race, religion, nationality, gender, or any other differences.

Identified Practice Gaps / Educational Needs

Literature reviews reveal that cultural competence training is an effective tool to increase knowledge, skills and attitude of healthcare professionals who work in culturally diversified communities, linked with increase of patients’ satisfaction. Qatar’s population is considered “extremely high-density multicultural setting”. Cultural competency training will support Qatar National Vision 2030 to develop a “comprehensive world-class healthcare system whose services are accessible to the whole population”.

The Center for Cultural Competence in Healthcare, Institute for Population Health at Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar has conducted several cultural competence workshops for healthcare professionals in Qatar, including Primary Health Care Corporation, Hamad Medical Corporation and community medical associations. The workshop evaluation and feedback from participants shows significant interest and a need for cultural competence training for healthcare professionals.

The identified learning needs are:

  • Definitions of cultural competence, race, ethnicity, bias, stereotyping and cultural humility.
  • Awareness of self-cultural heritage, gender, class, ethnic/racial identity.
  • Appreciation of the impact of diversity on Healthcare.
  • Knowledge of Communities’ health beliefs, practices and their impact on healthcare services.
  • Cross-cultural interactions in healthcare services and its impact on healthcare quality.

Objectives

At the end of this training participants will be able to:

  1. Value the impact of diversity in healthcare particularly in Qatar.
  2. Define in contemporary terms: culture, cultural competence and cultural humility
  3. Differentiate between cultural competence and patient centered care.
  4. Describe how culture influences both patients’ and the healthcare providers’ interactions and expectations.
  5. Recognize the effect of bias and stereotyping on healthcare quality and describe strategies to reduce them.

Target Audience

Health professionals (physicians, nurses, dentists, pharmacists, researchers, educators, administrators, lab technicians, radiology technicians, all Para-med and others)
